Storm Season Is Coming. Are You Ready?
When the call comes in, there's no time to scramble. Whether you're a journeyman who's worked a hundred storms or an apprentice heading out for your first major restoration, preparation is what separates a smooth deployment from a dangerous one.
At Linejunk, we're built by linemen, for linemen — and we know what it takes to show up ready. Here's the checklist we swear by.
1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Your PPE is non-negotiable. Before storm season, inspect and restock:
- Class 2 rubber gloves (check for cuts, punctures, or ozone damage)
- Leather protectors in good condition
- FR (flame-resistant) clothing — shirts, pants, and outerwear
- Hard hat with current inspection date
- Safety glasses and face shield
- Dielectric boots, inspected and re-soled if needed
- High-visibility vest or jacket
2. Your Storm Bag Essentials
Your storm bag is your lifeline on a long deployment. Pack smart:
- Change of FR clothes for 5–7 days minimum
- Rain gear (bibs and jacket)
- Work gloves (multiple pairs)
- Headlamp with extra batteries
- Personal first aid kit
- Phone charger and portable battery pack
- Cash — ATMs go down in storms too
- Non-perishable snacks and a water bottle
- Prescription medications (at least a week's supply)

3. Your Truck and Tools
- Inspect all hand tools — replace worn or damaged equipment
- Check your hot stick and test equipment calibration dates
- Stock your truck with extra PPE, rope, and rigging hardware
- Verify your chainsaw is fueled, sharpened, and ready
- Confirm your vehicle is serviced (oil, tires, fluids)
4. Communication and Documentation
- Save your crew foreman and dispatch numbers
- Know your union hall contact and emergency numbers
- Have your journeyman card and ID accessible
- Download offline maps for areas you may be deployed to
5. Mental and Physical Readiness
Storm work is grueling. 16-hour days, bad weather, and high-voltage environments demand your best. Before the season:
- Get a physical if you haven't recently
- Review your company's fatigue management policy
- Talk to your family — set expectations for communication during deployment
- Rest up. You can't pour from an empty cup.
